Maths

Intent

At Springwood Primary Academy, our maths curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is underpinned by research to ensure all pupils develop a secure and deep understanding of maths. Pupils are supported to:

  • Become fluent in core skills and recall knowledge accurately

  • Reason mathematically, explain their thinking, and justify solutions

  • Solve a range of problems, including real-life and complex scenarios

We aim for pupils to see maths as an interconnected subject, able to move confidently between representations and apply their learning independently.

Implementation

We follow a Mastery approach, ensuring pupils consolidate understanding before moving on and receive personalised support where needed. Key principles include:

  • Coherence: Build new ideas on prior knowledge through small, connected steps

  • Representation & Structure: Use concrete and visual methods to reveal mathematical concepts

  • Mathematical Thinking: Encourage discussion, reasoning, and problem-solving

  • Fluency: Develop quick recall and flexible application of skills

  • Variation: Present concepts in multiple ways to deepen understanding

Mastering Number & Mastering Maths:

  • FS2–Y2: Daily Mastering Number sessions to secure number sense and place value

  • Y3–Y6: Maths In Minutes sessions focusing on counting, reviewing prior learning, and embedding key skills

Resources & Methods:

  • Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract approach across all years

  • Numicon, Dienes, Cuisenaire rods, tens frames, and images used to support understanding

  • Bar method used for word problems and reasoning

Reasoning & Problem Solving:
Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, investigate, and explore problems to deepen understanding and retention.

Impact

Pupils make strong progress from their starting points, gaining confidence in calculation, problem solving, pattern recognition, and reasoning. They leave Springwood Primary Academy ready for the next stage of learning as capable and confident mathematicians.
