Curriculum

At Springwood Junior Academy we aim to bring learning to life by providing high quality teaching and stimulating learning activities which are structured and sequenced so that new knowledge is built upon and links all areas of the curriculum to enable pupils to develop a deep understanding. Through half-term learning foci, we aim to engage all pupils in learning; helping them to be enthused by gaining new knowledge and skills; challenging and enabling them to make at least good progress.

The knowledge led curriculum has been organised through an approach which considers what the pupils need to succeed in modern Britain. It incorporates the key skills set out in the National Curriculum (2014) and key drivers identified to stimulate the pupils’ interests and to enable them to successfully succeed in later life.  The intent (our key drivers) enables pupils to broaden and deepen their understanding to love reading in order to become 'Readers for Life'; aim high becoming 'Aspirational'; learn and model the Academy core values 'P.R.I.D.E' (positive, respectful, independent, determined, empathetic); become 'Responsible Citizens'.

A love for reading is encouraged in all aspects of school life.  As well as teaching the skills of reading, inspirational and classic books are used to support pupil interest and broaden their reading opportunities. Reading is used to research new ideas and make links between existing and future knowledge.  Reading is taught phonetically by highly-skilled phonics experts from FS1 to Y2.  The skill of reading phonetically will be embedded by the time pupils leave KS1 which ensures that they can develop reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary understanding through reading age appropriate texts throughout KS2.
